Hey everyone,
I'm a bit new to the forum but have been spending the past few days perusing it. I've been routinely impressed with the knowledge that you all showcase, as well as the good humor. I'm taking a bit of a risk posting here, but I figure that it is probably worth it seeing how wonderfully you've treated others over the years.
I'm currently working on a book about the life and work of John Entwistle. The book has been authorized by Christopher Entwistle, and where I am now several publishers are already quite interested. I am working on getting in contact with Bill Curbishley in regards to the book so that it may be considered an "official" Who publication, if you will, as well as to try and get interviews with Townshend and Daltrey in regards to it.
Which brings me to all of you - are there any interviews you believe I should read, people you believe I should talk to in order to get a thorough understanding of the Ox? Ive already secured a number of initerviews, but you Whooligans do tend to know some particulars that a decade-long Who fan may not. Let us see if internet networking can do what phone calls and letters can not!
Yours, H.K.
P.S. - If there is any advice anyone can offer regarding contacting The Who's manager Curbishley I would be greatly indebted to you.

I don't have anything to suggest right now at the top of my head but good luck with it! Would love to read it if you pull it off!

You should try to contact people who saw the Who in concert, mainly with Moon, and see what they thought of his playing and stage performance. Dougal Butler, Moon's personal assistant, is logged on facebook, so you should try to contact him in regards to Entwislte. He may be able to share some interesting tidbits with you. And may be able to put you in contact with Curbishley. John's son is also logged on facebook, which I assume you already know. There are many Who biographies and films out there that could be a good source of information to find what you are looking for. And of course the many books published on the Who. I have most of them, along with over six thousand mostly never seen in public concert photos of the band, mostly from the seventies tours. You should have no problem finding out anything you want to know about Entwistle. Just be persistent and don't expect everything, but the chase is always better than the catch don't you think? Good luck.

Is his mother Queenie still alive? I think so and, of course, his son Chris who lived with him for years. Then you'll want to talk to Dave "Cy" Langston who built his studio, Zak Starkey who had a major part in his post-Who band The Rock. The first and second wives are both around and the second one, Maxine, has some interesting stories. There's Steve Luongo for the last John Entwistle Band but also talk to Godfrey Townsend for some additional perspective on that.
Really best of luck and this book is way overdue!

Queenie has unfortunately passed away. It might make a better read for Who fans if there are people interviewed who knew the 'everyday' Ox rather than the usual faces i.e PT and RD. You could contact Irish Jack through Facebook and Craig Addecott through the same. Craig was a big mate of John's and spent many days with him at Quarwood. He has some terrific stories and pictures. Kenney Jones would be a good catch - he and John were good friends. Cy Langston would be a must, he played guitar on some of John's albums and was his PA when he was in America and through Cy you could maybe speak to a guy called Dave Ronson who was a very good mate of John's. Steve Luongo is a really great guy and will be extremely helpful re: The JEF. A lot of stuff is online through the John Entwistle Website and various other articles. A lot of articles were done while he toured Japan in the late 90's, early 2000's. At his site are pictures and stories from fans as well. John was the one member of The Who who would spend a lot of time with his fans and had a lot of friends who were fans. Alan Rogan (PT's guitar tech) will have a story or two. Good luck with Pete though... I am sure that after he did 'An Ox's Tale' he said he wouldn't discuss John at length again. There is an archived interview with Queenie within these pages I believe, also present was Alison I think. You could also try Skunk Baxter who did a lot of session work with John. Also watch old interviews with John... Aspel and Co, American stuff from the '89 tour, Amazing Journey, other concert DVD extras. Jon Astley is very approachable and there is an online account by him of the making of 'Who Are You' which sheds light on John's character in the studio. Good luck with the project (it sounds like early days?) and please make it a good, honest and worthwhile tribute to Thunderfingers. Who fans are very very protective of John but we love the truth and we know what he was like - it doesn't need candy coating! Also try to get as much new information as possible - we pretty much know every interview thats published and on DVD etc; and word will spread quickly if it just 'covers the bases'. We can be a pernickity bunch sometimes but any help you need - we'll give it a good go! BTW what is your connection with the band? Are you a fan writing the book or already a published author? An account by Maxine: http://brandy_and.tripod.com/oo/maxmail.htmlP. S Bill can be contacted at Trinifold Management

Gareth, you should have added some kind of health and safety advice about the colour scheme of that page.

Lisa unfortunately has passed away, but Alison and Maxene are still about. Queenie, also, has passed on. Thank you all for your advice, and encouragement. The Ox's Tale and Thunderfingers are both very valuable resources, and I believe that you all are quite right in saying that his fans are very important people to contact. He certainly did talk with his fans a great deal, and the number of stories that I have been collecting about how kind he was to them are truly inspirational.
I PM'd you, garetheox, to answer some of the questions that you posited a well as allow a bit more of an indepth look at my qualifications. I'm not entirely comfortable revealing my full identity, etc. on the board, but I'm more than comfortable contacting people individually and the like.
Would everyone be comfortable talking about the project here on occasion? I want to ensure that what I'm writing is something that the Who fans have not seen before, and is something that you all would find interesting and informative. Garethox raised a very good point about how persnickety people (and Whooligans in particular) can be, and I want this to be up to par.

Online involvement is always a good idea. I've seen so many Who authors run afoul of all the Who knowledge people have uncovered over the past 10 years.
P.S. The Who's first album was not called "The Who Sings My Generation". People still put that in books.

I'll "sticky" this thread so it stays at the top of the forum, and I'll change the main title slightly. That'll make it the permanent thread for all your biography discussion. I'll also add a link to the newsfader.

P.S. The Who's first album was not called "The Who Sings My Generation". People still put that in books. For many people, yes ; they have " The Who sings my Generation" in their hands. And for million others, the second one's called "Happy Jack" !

Presumably you can get in touch with Curbishley through Trinifold. Have you tried there?

Trinifold has been contacted, so we shall see how everything proceeds. So far, so good, and an overwhelmingly positive response from everyone contacted. Things are running rather smoothly now.

Weren't Joe Walsh and John good friends? And wasn't his playing with Zak on one of Ringo's tours the imetus for Zak joing The Who? They might be interesting people to talk to.

The ideal publication date, and what we're currently working for, is less than 2 years down the line. It's contingent upon a number of factors, but I'll be keeping everyone informed.
Trinifold's interest will allow people like Joe Walsh, Ringo, and Zak to be interviewed for the project. While many, many people have shown interest in being interviewed, their hands are tied until Bill Curbishley gives the OK. Curbishley's permission is also what has been holding PT and RD back from being interviewed, though Pete was curious about it when approached while promoting his own autobiography.
John Alcock, Doug Sandom, Colin Dawson, Chris Charlesworth, Godfrey Townshend, Sir John Hurt, Chris Entwistle, and Allison Entwistle are already involved. Chris is eager to see John's unfinished autobiography released as part of this biography, which I'm very excited about. He mentioned some other writings being released within it as well. We're reaching out to Herbert Entwistle's family, and hoping to get a response there as well. Irish Jack sent some interesting reminisces and some scans of the set lists that Entwistle mailed him when he was working on the Concert File.
So far, things are looking up with Trinifold showing interest. We should know in a couple of weeks whether or not Bill Curbishley will give the OK, but the fact he showed interest is pointing in that direction.
