Intersesting.Of course we know that at least some of the bass track was recorded as is evident from the Hull tracks released on VFABP.I wonder if the bass track's signal failed later in the show?(if at all)I couldn't see them releasing it without Johns bass though.I'd love to hear it.

Anyone know a cost? EDIT: just found it for 16,000YEN... around £123! Wow I wonder if the bass track's signal failed later in the show? On an other forum, Jon Astley was quoted from an interview: " Everybody says Hull's great....there's no bass on a few things but that's fixable".

You're talking about the man who "played" drums on Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting! ;D I just hope they've remastered Live At Leeds for this issue. It'd be a travesty if such a high-end release used the Deluxe mastering.

The Who and Universal could learn alot from the Doors and Rhino about how to release live archival material to fans. If Hull gets a seperate release I might get that. Otherwise I'm happy with the Tanglewood show I snagged earlier this year, which Astley didn't futz with.

i think they're one of many getting in on the game this christmas.... Pearl Jam did it last yr with a £100 box of TEN.. this yr Springsteen has Asbury Pk box, Bowie has Station to Station and GeorgeMichael(!) has Faith - each at a hundred notes.... u2 kinda did it with the 360 tour box
there are a few others i've forgotten about..

AC/DC did it for Backtracks and the Rolling Stones did it for Exile on Mainstreet.
I mentioned the Doors before because they've been really good about putting out live concerts from their archives the last few years at usually reasonable prices, well packaged and with good sound.

This is what Bobby Pridden was quoted apparently in the July issue of Record Collector: "We actually wanted to use Hull as the live recording rather than Leeds, but when we listened to the playback, the bass was missing. The interesting thing is that we obviously didn't listen all the way through. It was only when I was doing research for this album that I found some tracks with the bass playing loud and clear, and John in top form!"

i worry if this is the attitude of fans - to download rather than buy - what hope is there to get other stuff released.... but I know that's an argument that's been exhausted before so I'll not go on...

Luckily any decent boot site would refuse this 'official' release. Although there is plenty of sites which would host it....

whoireland, re:

If the mastering job is sub-standard (or even a straight re-issue of the Deluxe version we all already have) and some jiggery-pokery has gone on in order to create bass tracks where before there were none on the Hull material, then this release deserves nothing more than to be bootlegged and made available on torrent sites.
A release like *that* will be nothing more than an insult to the band that *WAS* The Who in 1970 and Universal / Trinifold deserve all they get

If the mastering job is sub-standard However work and effort has gone into the release. Whether it is sub-standard or not up to everyones expectations it shouldnt be shared on an illegal website. The releases on bootlegs forums are done by individuals for no financial gain and are fair and legal....

kempo your points may be valid.. unfortunately record companies work from numbers - if archive Who release is seen to sell poorly, it's little incentive for them to allocate budget to future releases as it's a sure sign of little return on investment.
and a release like this is mainly aimed at hardcore fans... a casual fan will buy a gtst hits for 9.99...or live at leeds for 4.99 they know a 99.99 release has a narrower audience
it sounds like the Hull release inclusion here will be substandard and so advertised as "a bonus" much like the coliseum gig was a bonus rather than an individual fully fledged release. it makes people praise it more.... had it been a one off release it probably wouldnt have been as well received.. i for one thought it was an extremely poor product.. the band were on great form....it was an important historic release but lets face facts - the quality was rubbish
the best answer as I see it would be to have Hull,Coliseum etc issued through the fan club as individual releases... but the legal tangles are too deep to do that

I'm glad LAL was in all it's glory when it was first released.

Richard Evans is saying over at the "official site" that this 40th anniversary release is being independently released by Universal Japan and that currently there are no plans for a UK or US release. So if you want to buy it, it will have to be as a Japanese import. Approx. $183.00 plus shipping, ouch!!!
