As I’ve been digging the It’s Hard LP this last week, (it’s getting a little better with each listen), I wonder what other fan’s likes/ dislikes of the Farewell tour?
Who’s last to me isn’t a fair representation of the tour. Just a hasty cash in job by the record company.
This is just my personal opinion, but I actually overall enjoy the performances I’ve heard. Bootlegs an’ all. Again, my personal opinion, so I’ll start off with the negatives first-
*I dislike the cheesy synthesiser sound and iffy backing vocals from I suspect is Tim Gorman. The boots show it’s not John, Pete or Roger.
*Pete’s penchant for idiot dancing and dressing like a reject from the Human League or Ultravox. Cringe fest. Not to mention Roger’s sometimes bad dress sense (e.g Toronto- what the hell was he wearing with all them zips on?)
*Kenney’s often ‘stiff’ drumming- compared to ‘79/80 where he was superb and all over the kit. This isn’t a knock of Kenney as I admire and respect him for taking on such an impossible task in the aftermath of Moons demise.
Now onto the positives-
* Regular set list changes with rarities smattered here and there. * John’s Bass sound is wonderful (to my deafened ears anyway). * I know to nearly all Pete’s best tone was with a Gibson SG, but I like his tone on this tour. * Roger seems to be in good voice for the most part.
Give me this tour over the 1989 Tommy on ice tour any day of the week.
I’ve got a soft spot for the Toronto show as I had just got into The Who at the time and it was the first of their concerts I had ever seen. I had my trusty cassette recorder by the TV recording it. So it holds special memories for me for that reason. The rest of the tour leaves me a bit cold to be honest.
And seeing Pete with his new romantic hairdo and clean shaven face, it’s hard to reconcile that with being the same Pete of just a few years before with his ‘classic’ look.
I often wonder is part of the problem the technology used to record the Audio. Because in a similar way, the stones still life tour always sounds terrible , but I’m sure it sounded different if you were there
I don’t like the farewell tour recordings as it’s sound is too bland for me and light bass. But maybe it was better to be there
