Art School - A look at the influence of art schools on the 60s generation of musicians. An interesting programme with a 7-8 minute section on Pete and The Who including an interview with Roy Ascot, Pete's art tutor at Ealing School of Art. He was a very avant garde tutor pushing the boundaries of art, exploring destructive art (queue film of art students smashing a piano!) and feedback art (not sound actually but how an action causes a re-action which changes the original action). These all fed through into Pete's work with The Who. The band were positioned as the first 60s band to take the 'happening' things from the early 60s art scene and integrate them into their stage show (eg union jacks on the amps), clothing (eg target t-shirts etc) and music (eg audio feedback).
There were excerpts of the band playing Out in the Street from some tv show (I've not seen this before), film of Pete in a union jack jacket (standing in a doorway - again I've not seen this before) and cuts from The Whole Scene (?) used in TKAA, including the interview with Pete ....Oh yeah and plenty of The Who smashing instruments!
It's repeated this Saturday night on BBC 4 so I'm told.
