I was having a discussion about this topic earlier today and thought it would make for an interesting thread on the forum. So let's get a list going....
Who has covered The Who?

Depends what you mean by covered. My eighth published book is about THE WHO. It's called: GENERATING WHO POWER FOR FANS: WHY THE WHO IS THE GREATEST BAND. As for musical covers I've done Pete windmills on guitar while jumping up and down and I've sang WHO songs in the shower so no one could hear me. -Greg Bauder

Depends what you mean by covered. Bands signed to record labels who have covered Who songs, either live or in the studio.

It is a good idea for a thread, but this is a dirty alley to walk down. The sights are not pretty. I cant think of many people who have covered TheWho, probably because they know they cant even get close. There's no way some average bunch of musicians can cover a Who song without draining it of its power and glory. You have to be TheWho, otherwise you're just breaking it down into basic chord structures and drumbeats.
So leaving the quality aside, i remember *asis doing My Generation on a tv programme with fat alan white sweating like a bus driver while gallagher twiddled his delay pedal to make it sound like he was smashing a guitar. The cameras did most of the work.
And i think i've mentioned before about what fred fckn durst did to BehindBlueEyes..

Lots and lots of people have covered Who songs. It's just that either they're not famous or they weren't hits except for a few exceptions (Elton's or The New Seeker's "Pinball Wizards", The Assembled Multitudes "Overture From Tommy"). Here's a few of the more famous people who've done covers:
"I Can't Explain" - David Bowie, Sheryl Crow, Yvonne Elliman, The Flamin' Groovies, Leif Garrett, The Raspberries, The Scorpions, The Spin Doctors "Anyway Anyhow Anywhere" - David Bowie, Alex Chilton, The Flaming Lips "Out in the Streets" - Count Five "My Generation" - Alice Cooper, Count Five, Hilary Duff, Green Day, Manfred Mann, McFly, Oasis, Phish, Leo Sayer, The Patti Smith Group, Rick Springfield, The Sweet "The Kids Are Alright" - Billy Bob Thornton, Pearl Jam "It's Not True" - The Amboy Dukes (Ted Nugent) "A Legal Matter" - The Alarm "Substitute" - Blur, Marillion, Graham Parker, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, Richard Thompson "Circles" - Paul Weller "Disguises" - The Jam, Of Montreal "Run Run Run" - The Birds (with Ronnie Wood) "So Sad About Us" - Shaun Cassidy with Todd Rundgren's Utopia, The Jam, The Merseys "A Quick One While He's Away" - Green Day, The Beatles (sorta) "Pictures of Lily" - David Bowie, Ian McLagan "I Can See For Miles" - Styx, Tina Turner "Armenia City in the Sky" - Sugar "Call Me Lightning" - The Flamin' Groovies, Joan Jett "Overture from Tommy" - Liberace, Henry Mancini "Sparks" - Phish "The Acid Queen" - Tina Turner "Pinball Wizard" - Petula Clark, Elton John, McFly, The Shadows Tommy medley - Buddy Rich, The Smithereens "The Seeker" - Rush, The Smithereens
I'll do more later. Gotta go to work!

Well judging from your knowlage of Whitesnake I presume you think they started in 1987?well they didnt,1978,where they were, and still are a blues based rock band, but even if your point was directed at the late 80s incarnation of Whitesnake, you are still incredibly misguided, dunno how you could say something like "love aint no stranger/still of the night, guilty of love/gambler(yes ive used 2 albums for reference there) sounds anyhing like WASP's F*** like a beast/mean man, wildchild or indeed, blind in texas. Whitesnake were never a metal band either....I could go on but this thread aint bout that.

Going back to that list - what an incredible tribute to the world's greatest rock band!
(assuming the covers were all done for the right reasons)

Van Halen did 'WGFA' as well. Zimmers - My Generation. Green Day - A Quick One, My Generation. Pearl Jam - Love Reign O'er Me, The Real Me, BO'R, TKAA. The Scorpions - I Can't Explain. Hillary Duff - My Generation. Great White - Substitute (bit Whitesnakeish though! ) The Melvins - My Generation. We did a gig the other night and played 'I Can't Explain'. Afterward, this guy comes up and proceeds telling me how it is the greatest thing The Scorpions had ever written!

EDDIE VEDDER sang a version of "I'M ONE" that was so powerful, Pete, playing guitar, took a couple a steps back at the end in respect. Bryan Adams was also on the TV show and I can't remember what he sang. It was before 2002, because the incomparable JAW was playing. Maybe someone else remembers that show better. -Greg Bauder

The Smashing Pumpkins did a version of "JOIN TOGETHER." What about the Symphony TOMMY album: I no longer have it but I remember Rod Stewart singing "THE ACID QUEEN."

You're right. I was confused about Elton John talking Rod Stewart out of playing "PINBALL WIZARD" in the film. Eric Clapton and Arthur Brown sang in TOMMY a version of "EYESIGHT TO THE BLIND" which wasn't written by THE WHO. Didn't SIMON TOWNSHEND sing "MIRACLE CURE" in the TOMMY film?

Pearl Jam - Love Reign O'er Me, The Real Me, BO'R, TKAA. You can add "Let My Love Open The Door", "Naked Eye", "Blue Red & Grey", "Squeeze Box", "My Generation", "The Seeker", "Let's See Action", "I'm One", "I Can't Explain" and "A Quick One While He's Away" to that list.

To be fair, this could be the longest thread ever! There must have been thousands of Who covers over the years. Keeping it within the thread i would be interested to hear of people who have been to a concert and heard a who cover. I saw Pearl Jam in Arras, France last year doing a great BOR cover. And also great raw version of BOR being down by Gaslight Anthem at Hammersmith Odeon last year too....

John Entwistle - Heaven & Hell, My Wife. Keith Moon - The Kids are alright. (They don't really count though.) The New Seekers did a medley of Pinball Wizard/See me feel me. Mr Big did Baba on the cd single of To be with you.
(Gareth's quote about the guy who said Can't Explain being the best thing The Scorpions had ever written, Brilliant!!)

I've always thought this was a decent rendition by The Sweet - with appropriate ending mayhem.
