I just watched the Osaka of "5:15" video and was wondering if Pete's guitar riffs (or whatever they are called) are rehearsed or are they spontaneous? Does the rest of the band know if and when he is going to do one and how long it will go on for, or do they just go with the flow?

Well the solos are different and a different length every night, if that's what you mean. (not sure)

They just go with the flow. Improvisation has always been an integral part of Who shows.

This particular bit of footage I found disappointing....I know it was recorded in front of Pete's monitors, but even his playing seems a little way out. Reminds me of his playing in '79 when he used to "boogie off on his own".

It's improvised, but where Pete is concerned, badly so. The 'modern' Who jam seems to consist of the band grooving along together just fine, while Pete stumbles off in a different direction together. At times it comes across as though he's forgetten he's onstage and thinks he's jamming in his bedroom on his own.
Quite possibly if he stuck to powerchord improvs that wouldn't be the case, it's the recent appearance of the widdling that's causing the problem.

On a side note, Pete usually does this soloing in different directions when he is creating new riffs for NEW Songs. JD
