he Who, one of the biggest bands to come out of Britain, have been loved across the generations from mods in the 1960s to indies in the 2020s.
So when it was announced back in January that they'd be starting their UK tour at Craven Park, there was an obvious buzz about seeing one of the greatest groups of the last century return to the city.
Joined on the night by Birmingham reggae band UB40, the gig promised to be an exciting Thursday evening out. So, here's the rev-Who ...
While the event was seated, it was a very relaxed and fluid rule. You could just stand in the wings, sit wherever was free, and be as close or far back to the stage as you felt comfortable with. Something that I found very handy, especially with my guest being on crutches.
Straight away I wanted to check if the pitch would be covered and protected. A few rugby fans had their eyebrows raised when the pitch was bare for Rod Stewart just two days earlier, with the Hull Derby set to be played this weekend. Kudos to the groundsman though as the pitch looked in top form, and any doubts I had for Sunday were sharply dismissed.
UB40 (Ft Ali Campbell) offered the quiet before the storm, while still getting the crowd in the mood with classics like Red Red Wine, I Got You Babe and their cover of (I Can't Help) Falling in Love With You. The pitch got gradually more packed with people coming from the bar in time for the singalong hits, with Quadrophenia-esque parkas and bullseye shirts at the ready.
Pete Townshend introduced the Heart of England Philharmonic Orchestra. One of the last things I expected from one of the biggest rock and roll bands, but they were incorporated seamlessly as they played through some of the classics from the 1969 album Tommy, such as 1921, The Acid Queen and Amazing Journey.
Although sounding magnificent, the orchestra didn't get bums off their seats. It wasn't until the first rift of Pinball Wizard people sat up and The Who made themselves known on HU9.
The hits followed as the orchestra took off to allow The Who to perform the classics as they have been doing for nearly 60 years. Substitute got the audience singing full voice, while My Generation, one of the best songs ever written, was unreal live, as it has been across the decades. Although there were one or two moments where it sounded like Roger Daltrey hit an off note, the scream in Won't Get Fooled Again was utterly brilliant, and it felt like the amps were turned up to 11 for these heavy hitters.
Pete Townshend, without a doubt, still has it, with the jokes, stories and talent all still as great as ever at the age of 78. He shared anecdotes about how the band wanted Hull to be the starting point for the tour because his sister-in-law hailed from the city and how the fishing industry tied into his family. He also joked about how Roger is deaf and that he only heard himself speak following Keith Moon's passing, along with how boomers are the worst thing about the modern world.
His talent was truly highlighted with The Rock, a six-minute song with no vocals which was one of the most impressive feats of music I think I have ever experienced. Meanwhile, the screens showed every piece of major world news that has happened since The Who formed in 1964.
From the US invasion of Vietnam to the Falklands War - a few boos rang out for Margaret Thatcher - running up to the Queen's death, every significant part of history was highlighted. It certainly made you realise how long this band has been together, and are rightly considered rock 'n' roll legends.
Baba O'Riley ended the set. A few bells of "You Hull" rang out, given that it is a song bellowed out at the MKM when the Black and Whites walk out. Violinist Katie Jacoby stole the show with this one with her talent; centre stage and with a spotlight usually reserved for the frontman, she looked to have soaked up and loved every second of it, and rightly received a massive applause from the crowd.
For an encore, the orchestra and band left. Just Roger, Pete, two microphones and one acoustic guitar remained and, as people slowly made their way out, they played a lovely intimate version of Tea & Theatre.
