I was leant the Tommy on DVD recently, which hass some great extras- one of which is Matt Kent's interview with Pete. Very in depth and cleared plenty of things up with some very interesting things said! However whilst watching it and reading the introduction notes in the booklet (written by Matt Kent) i wounded how the hell he landed the job he has at the moment! In the booklet he explains how he was a 15 year old fan attending the premier in Leciester Square of Tommy. Does anyone know what happened in between then and now? And how he has become so involved in the Who, books, photos, most introduction notes in reissued albums, internet, videos, touring with them etc?
thanks

I remember before the 2002 tour he posted something in the "diary" section of The Who site that explained some of that, since people had been asking him about it on the chat board.
I'll go see if it's still there.

From what I recall, before starting the fanzine he and co-writer Mark Donovan sought out an 'official' status for it - there being no official Who fan club or fanzine in existance at the time. The pair were granted the 'official' tag, thus Matt got his foot in the Who's door. Personally I always preferred 'Generations'. Naked Eye may have had the benefit of colour pictures and exclusive news, but when there was no Who activity to report it tended to be rather thin on substance.

Here's a cut'n'paste for those of you too lazy to visit PT.com. The whole article is about 275 paragraphs longer: In the 90's, fed up with the lack of any sort of activity from the band and spurred on mainly by the indifference of the record companies to the bands rich back catalogue, I helped put together a couple of fan conventions in London. The first one saw Roger and John playing a storming set of Who classics in a tiny pub in Shepherd's Bush. From there I, along with Mark Donovan, set up the fanzine (and at the time 'semi' official fan club) 'Naked Eye.' I guess that's how I happen to be here today. The job offer hit me as a surprise and I can remember it word for word to this day. October 1998 and the first call on my new mobile phone. 'Hello, can I speak to Matt please.' 'Who is it?' ' 'ItᄒÒs Pete Townshend.' 'Yes, of course it is, who is it?' 'No, it's Pete Townshend.' After my doubting it a few more times and, I also seem to remember, throwing in a few expletives, it began to dawn on me that maybe it was Pete. 'Oh, hi Pete, what can I do for you?' like it was an everyday occurrence, 'IᄒÒm thinking of opening a website and was wondering if you'd like to run it?' After probably wasting a couple of pico seconds thinking about it I accepted and that's what brings me here today. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Remember that Pete asked Matt to go to work for him, not the other way around.
There were other choices, but The Who always seem to choose people they're comfortable working with. Pete knew Matt and his work with the fan club, and he seems to have made a good call, as Matt has done a fine job.
Certainly you wouldn't want to get someone in like Yolanda Saldivar, right?

My only argument with that would be that by offering the job to Matt, Pete offered it to someone who is incredibly knowledgeable about The Who, but not very knowledgeable about the Internet. Not the best state of affairs when you're employed as a Webmaster! Half the time Matt comes across as if he's learning about the online experience as he goes along, which on occasion leads to matters being not quite as "fine" as they could be. Yes, he's done a good job considering he was chucked in at the deep end, but it may have been better to have sent him on a bunch of computer courses before beginning his new employment, and then have him working beside someone who was fully Internet savvy. As a result, things would be running on all cylinders and the PT site would be living up to - and possibly reaching beyond - it's full potential.

This is true, but I think Pete had confidence in Matt's ability to get along with the band, and also expected him to get along well with the fan base--some others have noted that the ability to get along with the band may well be The Who's primary reason for choosing one person over another for any kind of employment. Many of the Internet webmasters are highly technical, but may not be so good at dealing with people.

Thats a very good point, but if we had a choice of Pete choosing someone knowledgable with the internet or with the Who im glad he choose someone who knew the who. If he asked a computer geek to work with the internet site but didnt have a clue about the who it would have been pointless- perhaps they should draft someone else in as well!?

Either way I think he does a pretty good job updating during tours and such. One thing, though, that we're all due for is a new pete diary. It seems like months since the last, short-lived, one.
