I'm sure he'd have better luck if he allowed it to be broken up.
The trouble is that those who might be interested have probably got quite a lot of it already.

If I could go onto "Who wants to be a millionaire" and "survivor" and win each one three times each (for taxes) I'd be able to buy it.

The amusing thing is, Weiner is probably the only person in the world who would bid on this.
He knows all the other bigtime 'movers and shakers' on the collecting scene, so it's logical to assume he initially made approaches to them. They obviously weren't interested in the deal he was offering, hence the collections appearance on Ebay. You'd think he'd now have the intelligence to realise that if the known serious collectors aren't biting, it's highly doubtful some unknown collector is gonna crawl out of the woodwork on an Internet auction site and cough up 5 million.
In this situation his refusal to split is nothing short of idiocy.

I can't quite understand how he manages to calculate $5 million anyway. I mean, is he saying that's how much he's spent over the years?

I can't quite understand how he manages to calculate $5 million anyway. I mean, is he saying that's how much he's spent over the years? I think he's made the mistake of grading the value in relation to what he paid for it, which in the collecting world is always a mistake. When you're a serious collector the value of an item is whatever you can afford. You go to an auction, it only takes one other fanatical collector who's after the same item as yourself to push it's final price up to £1500, when it's actual value is £1000 less. If you religiously collect Bolivian picture sleeves and a seller has one you've never seen before, and you never thought existed, you'll pay what he asks. Doesn't mean anyone else in the world will. That said, 5 million for Weiner's collection? That seems very overexaggerated. I heard he was forced to put it up for sale as his woman gave him an ultimatum. If true, then he's probably overpricing it on purpose, as she's hardly likely to know it's value, and he gets to keep it while she thinks he's doing his best to sell. .

Wow...he has a woman? Poor thing... That rumour was something started on this really obscure chat forum I was on a long time ago.... though it very well could be true. If you go ahead and look at this 'other stuff' page, you can instantly tell that this guy is a maniac collector. Real cars, toy cars, radios, cats! This impulse to collect obsessively is the result of a lack of some chemical in the brain- I read this in 'vinyl junkies- adventures in record collecting.'

My friend has an uncle who's an obsessive collector,he collects all sorts of junk from flea markets and car boot sales, every room in his house is a storage room,it's like an assault course just to get into the house! All the windows have been boarded up cos all the local schoolkids were using them for target practice. He's in his 70's or 80's,& if he dies my friend'll get lumbered with clearing his house. It'd take 4 or 5 removal trucks

This was the first time I've ever looked at that part of the site...sorta scary. There's gotta be something not right with this guy... And what the hell does he do for a living?

When he passed away there was so much stuff in his house that they had to get in through an upstairs window as every other room was filled with junk. And it wasnt like he was short of cash, theplace he lived in was this huge house. My parents always told me that alot of people who survived the depression in the 1930s became so used to making do and use of collected stuff that they never sort of stopped. A bit like The Wombles I suppose.

I consider myself a big Who fan, but even if I won the $117 million like the housekeeper in Massachusetts (that was her take-home of the $250 milion), I still wouldn't spend $5million on Who stuff. Maybe one or two very cool, very unique things, but no the whole thing. Also I think true collectors like to acquire things gradually and sort of savor a new edition for a while. I think if someone did spend the $5million they will break up the collection and sell it off anyway.

Maybe if you paid The Who five million theyd do a private show. That would beat any collectable item ;D Of course Id pay a deposit first and the rest after the gig just to make sure they did the setlist i picked Maybe I should contact Eelpie and put in an offer. I havent spoken to my bank manager yet, do you think theyd loan me 5 million dollars, while I have 88cents in my bank account? ;D

islander has a good point, you will never sell any collectable for it's true worth, unless of course it is so rare that it is virtually impossible to get it elsewhere. i learned that many years ago when i tried to sell off some sports trading cards that i had at the same cost indicated in the catalogue in which i was told almost exactly what islander posted.
and besides i can think of many other things to spend 5 million dollars on than a collection of who albums and posters. does this make me any less of a who fan? maybe i need to write up and addendum to my post on the rachel fuller thread and add you must buy whitefang's who collection. man five million dollars that's alot of mcdonalds, wendys and burger king. super sized for me.

And what the hell does he do for a living? I know- it freaked me out the first time I looked at all the photos of that cr*p too. He has to be very, very rich though to be able to afford all that cr*p. It's funny too how you see just random stuff in the background, like a pic of his cat and then some who sell out Lps just sitting there!

I just checked out all his other stuff, and while I can understand having a toy or radio collection, I just don't get the Soupy Sales collection! How and why would someone accumulate so much stuff on Soupy Sales? My only vague recollection of him was from the game show "What's My Line". I could see Milton Berle or Sid Cesar, but Soupy Sales?
Also I checked out the cats, and they don't look like your average animal shelter felines!

I thought they were ugly Why is it that the ugliest kinds of cats, dogs, etc are often the most expensive? It must be some animal conspiracy developed after there was an ugly cat glut in the market. Someone said "charge $150 for 'em and kill off a few to make 'em rare!"
