Where and when were these pictures taken?? Anyone know? Might be on "Top Of The Pops" or "Ready Steady Go". And around 1965.

Given the choice between Top Of The Pops and RSG, I'd guess the upper pic was TOTP, purely because of the rather 'tame' background scenery.
I wouldn't wanna risk guessing for the bottom one, but looking at the state of Moon's sparse and un-logoed kit, it must be a pretty early performance.

It's the same drumkit. I think one of the pictures are at rehersals.

I hadn't noticed the kit was the same! Obviously they'd made enough money by the time the top pic was taken to be able to afford a logo painted on the front! I wouldn't say either picture was taken at a rehearsal. Those are definitely TV stage sets. Can you imagine the result if Moon let rip in a live situation with his kit balanced precariously on those tiny podiums?

Why the heck would Moon be playing that rediculous little drumset anyway??
I bet that's a kit owned by the tv studio, which they know can fit on the podium.

I know that BillyBill. I've been doing research for thewho.net/whotabs, and came across these pictures. I'm possitive that this is not Moon's drumset.

The first WHO performance on the B.B.C. for which a contract survives was a programme called "Gadzooks! It's All Happening" in March, 1965. I think this must've been the first one ever because the internal correspondence about it refers to their mums' and dads' approval. The next two contracts refer to "Top of the Pops", at Manchester and are dated shortly afterwards. Presumably they played "I Can't Explain". If these pictures ARE from a T.V. show, I'd suggest "Gadzooks" as favourite for the first one. I did see it sometimes and the sets MIGHT have been like this, but it certainly doesn't look like a "Ready Steady Go" set, as someone rightly said. Both pictures are of course different occasions, presumably the bass drum was decorated by Richard Barnes. In any case, it looks like a posed publicity shot to me. Might the kit be the original oyster blue one that Keith bought before he joined The Who?

It might be "Gazooks".
The first tv appearence were in august 1964 "the Beat Room" for the BBC 2.
I don't think that Moon got the finnish change from oyster blue to white, but I won't rule that option out.
In the "dear boy..." book Moon poses with a similar looking drumset with the ride cymbal mounted on the bassdrum, which is quite unusual.

Drummerboy, do you know the date of the August '64 "Beat Room"? None of the four Radio Times entries for August, for the programme, list The Who, or perhaps I'm being blind and just missed them. Their contributors record cards for that year make no mention of them either. Not even as "The Detours" or "The High Numbers".
Are you saying that you can tell from your pictures that the drums are white? They might be of course, but I think oyster blue is very light, like powder blue, and might come out looking like white on a monochrome print. Especially one done under bright studio lighting. P'raps I'm wrong about oyster blue, I never heard of it from anywhere else, but then I've never seen a dark blue oyster!

Thanks, Drummerboy, I've found it. The Radio Times entry doesn't mention them, perhaps they were a last moment booking. I saw the contract and it is indeed in the name of "The High Numbers" (There was a band at the time called "The High Windows"! Came from Israel). It was dated 11th August, so that may have been a little late for the R.T. entry. For interest, among the programme details are "Twenty five minutes of non-stop beat and shake, Presenting Brenda Lee, The Swinging Blue Jeans, Tommy Tucker", and then follow the resident performers.
Thanks for shewing me what blue oyster pearl is like. No, I don't think that could ever be made to appear white, could it? I'm interested now, I'll look further....I'm sure I've seen a solo picture of Roger like that, with the rest trimmed off.
Cheers,
John.
