What are your views on the band playing new material on the tour......
I ask because I fear that the new album won`t have been released by the time the tour starts.
Maybe it`s just me but I like to have heard stuff a few times before hearing it live.
If there are maybe 4 or 5 new songs in the set that people haven`t heard before then I can see energy levels dropping.....
The Stones are curently playing 3 new songs in their set and they appear to be received pretty well......their album was released before their tour started.
Hopefully the new Who album will surface early June so we can get into the new songs......I won`t hold my breath though!

I have a feeling that it won't be out right at the start of the tour but they'll play a couple new things, then will add more when it's released.

by the sounds of it the oo will stick to the tried and tested formular, possibly with a couple of suprise vintage tracks. i think this will be the case for them on what looks like a year of festival dates. mabye when the real tour begins they will have had the new album out and in the ears of the public by the end of 2006 and will play some new stuff probally starting in usa!

I would think the festival gigs are the perfect place to try out the newer songs. Smaller audiences, with a more intimate feel, offer an insight into how they might go down in the stadiums and amphitheatres later on.

I would have thought the opposite, festivals by their very nature mean that bands play to a large percentage of non-fans, so it's a better and safer bet for them to stick to the standards. You play new material that doesn't work (or is totally alien) to a bunch of first-time watchers, and you're really doing yourself no favours. Stick to what they've heard on the radio, and you'll win them over.
On the other hand small venues are better places for experimentation because the audience will usually consist totally of members of a band's fanbase, so if that band play new material, be it unfamiliar or bad, it's not that big a deal. The band won't be losing any fans, potential fans, or CD sales over it.

O f course they could play new tunes. They could just say "next tune is "name" and then play it without telling it's new. However since this is Townshend it wouldn't be possible since there would have has 10 minute lecture about the tune and such bollocks....

I suspect they've played new material in the jams during the last few years, and I could see them doing that for a festival audience--just going from one song into another.

It is a weird thing, but I understand if they have new music they should play it. However it will be weird where you'll have 50,000 people singing along to Pinball Wizard, then suddenly the number will dwindle to 0 singing along with a new tune. I would prefer the new cd to be out before the tour (I am in the US so there is a possibility of that).

I think they will play 1 or 2 new songs at the summer festival dates. A festival is a place to see a band play all the hits and most of the time a band at a festival will just play there hits. That is because some of the people at the festivals will not know a lot of the tunes the band are playing and they want to try and make a few new fans. I think that the new CD will be out in November 06. That is what I read. I think that they will play some festivals in Europe this summer. Than the last few months of this year they will tour the USA. Then they will tour Australia beginning of next year then around spring of 2007 they will do an arena tour of the UK. I think they best time to see them play new songs will be when they do there own tour. Not the summer dates.

Good point, but it's rare that a piece be unplayable live. Even Quadrophenia could eventually be played in its entirety. The Flaming Lips are able to put over some very complicated songs using modern day technology. So I don't suspect that the Who will have much of a problem when it comes to the actual technical side of the equation.
Newer songs can't be expected to go over as well as the older material, but they don't have to. I doubt fans were comfortable with a song like "Eminence Front," when the band first started playing it live - but now it goes over splendidly. It would be better if the CD were released before the tour.

why I said in "" is because 99% (all ?) of their material is of course perfectly playable, including whole Quad which can easily be played as 4- piece band without tapes (has always been total bollocks to claim othewwise) etc. etc.. However they for some idiotic reason think that most their material cannot be played. No reason to think that same will not continue regards to new songs.
You will get at max 2-3 new songs + same tired s**t repeated eachshow for whole tour without change .... sadly

Been watching a couple of Dvds............Forum and Yokohama from 2004.........I really like Real Good Looking Boy and would miss it if it was dropped from this tour.
I know there are mixed views about this song but I think it`s a welcome addition to the set.
Hopefully the new new material is as good BUT we really need to hear it before the tour!

It's no matter of the quality... even if the material would be good mst of it still won' be played live... Normally, I would agree but......18 months is a long time to be on the road. The band tends to play more material when out for longer periods of time. So let's hope. JD
