Why anyone would pay 450 pounds for a set of nearly exactly the same recordings in a fancy-looking box is way, way beyond me.

Because it's cheaper than buying them separately. Really though...I don't get it. I love the fact that the Encore Series exists and that I have a recording of the show I was at, but I can't see myself ever buying more than two or three (and at the moment I still only have one) But, I do recall in 2002 there was some demand for it. Not a lot, but some people were buying all of them and wanted to save money by buying them all at once. I would never do it, but someone is.

That's slightly misleading.
There are two types of boxsets you can get. One is a "deluxe" metal box, limited to 150, including a Pete and Rog autograph. That's the seriously expensive one.
There's also a standard cardboard box like in 2002 if you're getting all the concerts. That's rather less.

Still- 450 pounds is sortof OK if you live in the UK, but then with the exchange rate for the Canadian Dollar: I'd have to pay over $1000!

What is interesting is that Matt mentions 'at least 17' shows, whereas TheMusic.com mentions exactly 16 shows to be in the box - so according to TheMusic.com the world tour is over after the upcoming US shows, Matt leaves it open somehow....
