The Who convention in London falls duing the week the TCT concerts usually happen at RAH. I think the organizers planned it this way so Whofans could get the most bang from their bucks. However, there are now some hints going around that the convention might be "involved" in the Who tour in some way. That sort of sounds like some or all of The Who regulars might play at the convention.
This interpretation is all speculation, of course, as the convention organizers have supposedly contracted with tribute bands to play.

There was a similar situation with the second Who convention in 199.....I can't remember the damn year...8? That was perfectly placed as there an exhibition of Who photography taking place in a gallery just down the road, and the NFT were holding "An Evening With The Who" where rare footage and a screening of TKAA was shown, including personal appearances by Richard Barnes and Dougal Butler. All in all it felt more like a Who weekender than a Who convention. There was also a BIG buzz around that convention of at least one Who member attending - the band were all in the country and not touring at the time - and there was a noticeable slump amongst a fair chunk of the audience when the organisers announced from the stage that the rumours weren't true. I suppose with this latest convention there's a slightly higher chance someone Who-y will turn up.....twenty quid for a ticket....you could buy 20 lottery tickets for that....but you have a far higher chance for your twenty quid of seeing a Who member at the convention than you do of winning the lottery with 20 tickets!

Pete was there; I ran into him on the stairs, and The Simon T. band played. However, I didn't see Roger or John.

Pete was there? At the Astoria? All I can say is that he managed to keep a very low profile! He must have turned up on a whim, as when they announced the raffle prize (a 'Who By Numbers' gold disc, if I recall correctly) they said the band apologised for not attending and mentioned the rumour was just a rumour....so obviously even the organisers weren't aware he'd be popping in later that evening! The only..ahem...famous personage I bumped into was the guy who wrote the 'Meaty Beaty Big And Bouncy' book.

I'm not sure Pete was there later in the evening, but he was there at opening. I heard later that the doorman stopped the Simon Townshend band from entering (the tossers didn't have tickets!) so Pete went down to straighten things out.

When was the convention before '98? Wasn't it '95? The Who minus Pete played that year, and they might do something like that again this year--or maybe Pete would decide to play, too. You never know. ;D

BTW, the band Dogs has announced that they will be supporting The Who at the TCT benefit. Heads up! Sounds like they're going to play RAH again this year.

You never know. ;D Yeah, '95. I missed that one, which I regret now! I think a lot of the expectancy that Pete would turn up and perform at the second convention was because he didn't attend the first....whereas the rest of The Who did and performed a gig. Townshend must've been going out of his way to avoid me in '98, that's all I can say! I was right near the front of the queue and one of the first in (No, I'm not one of those who camp outside the venue all night. I just strolled down about an hour before the doors opened and there were only about 20 people in the queue!) and I never saw hide nor hair of him all afternoon. Are you sure it wasn't Nicholas Cage?! I did see Irish Jack, but didn't find out who he was till a few weeks later. He was wearing a jacket covered in newspaper clippings, so I assumed he was some down and out who'd managed to wander in off the street. Centrepoint was just over the road, so it was a logical assumption!

Hi Shell, if you check the top of the 'General Who Chat' section you'll see a Who Convention post with some messages from those attending.
Personally, I'm 50/50 at the moment.
