I will go on tour.....
Back to Diary Dates As it seems everyone in the world is already making announcements about a forthcoming Who tour I figured I should make my own statement.
I have said many times, repeated up until a few days ago, that I am reticent about committing to a tour without a completed new Who album under my belt.
As things stand I am still pushing to produce some more songs. So the announcement may seem premature. It is not.
I certainly don't give a flying f**k whether anything I write is a hit, or will get played on my beloved rock radio, or sell a million - or might not fit because it sounds like a Broadway tune, or as though I've 'stolen' Tom Waits voice (exactly how does one steal a voice that was already on loan from someone as esteemed as Louis Armstrong or Earl Hines? God knows how Tom feels about the idea I've stolen his voice.)
What I care about is that Roger Daltrey feels comfortable with the songs I write so he can sing a few of them on stage - while I lunge around looking gorgeous and playing show-off guitar like a kid in a music shop. After forty-five years of this cr*p I've just started to enjoy it.
So why the sudden announcements?
Who manager Bill Curbishley has come up with a great scheme that may circumvent the need for a CD full of Green Day and White Stripes impersonations. No, it is not an 'EP'. It is a truly inspired idea. I'll let his agents pass you the news when they have it polished like a new Pimp-My-Ride Hummer.
What his brilliant idea means is that if I don't have a full thirty tracks ready to go, we can settle on what I do have. So I can commit.
There has been a footnote to the articles I've read that suggest that my girlfriend Rachel Fuller may be opening some Who shows. She probably won't. If we are going to be nepotistic I would like to invite my brother Simon's band CASBAH CLUB. I saw them recently in London and they are intense: Who fans would love them.
Rachel is planning touring versions of IN THE ATTIC and BASEMENT JAM, her hugely popular webcast talk and music shows. This not necessarily modest circus would follow the Who's own FAT CHANCE calvacade. I'm sure she'll play some regular club dates along the way too. I hope Roger and I will be able to drop in on some of those too. It would be great to keep this tour flexible, dangerous, exciting, innovative and accessible as well as providing high-end rock shows for those of us who like pretty lights and songs we already know.
I have high hopes for the whole tour to be shared to a wide audience at home in a mixture of PAY FOR VIEW and FREE special webcasts. Some of the proceeds will go to charity of course.
I also have a very, very cool surprise to announce in June, just before the tour kicks off.
Now leave me the f**k alone while I help support my son while he gets through his exams.

So Pete's 100% on board. Great news. The boys (Townshend, Daltrey, Curbishley) seem to taking this sh** seriously, but are they still good enough?
Will they produce a worthwhile album, nice stage versions of old and new songs and a truly innovative tour now they're into their sixties. Only time will tell, but bless them for trying.

Any speculations on what his "Cool Surprise" announcement in June is?

Maybe the "Long Live Rock"-download site? Or the new album?

Of course there won't be any innovative tour ala Tommy/Quadrophenia or anything There will be tour with maybe 3 news songs + same old s**t and this repeated for the whole tour without any variation... I hope when that cr*p is over maybe there will Pete "solo" aulbum and/or shows, would prove to be much more interesting/better...

Possibly the surprise is letting people hook up recorders to the soundboard - as The Greatful Dead did. I do believe Pete mentioned this as a possibility in a diary entry not to long ago. Whatever it is, it sounds like lots of people will be seeing The Who this next year. The big question for me (and maybe Rolling Mule ) is will they take a southern turn when they get over here to the states. They haven't played that much in the South since '97 - 3 shows to be exact.

If this is a major tour, I'm sure they'll hit Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Tampa, Alburquerque and West Palm Beach. Is that anywhere close to you? JD

If that's the surprise, it'll be hard to produce anything by June. ;D

www.petetownshend.co.uk/diary/display.cfm?id=227&zone=diaryAs it seems everyone in the world is already making announcements about a forthcoming Who tour I figured I should make my own statement. I have said many times, repeated up until a few days ago, that I am reticent about committing to a tour without a completed new Who album under my belt. Did Townshend really completely fail to notice that those rumours were kick-started by his girlfriend, who also kept them chugging along? If he's getting that out of touch, I'm getting worried! I wonder what this Curbishely idea is? It sounds like it involves getting the music out at a moments notice, as and when required...with no risk involved as per the usual route. Maybe some kind of pay-per-download thing? Have to say though, going by the way I've been pretty much unimpressed with what I've heard of Townshend's recent material, a collection of Green Day/White Stripes impersonations would have made one nicely kick-ass and contemporary sounding recording.... probably more 'Who' sounding than the final Who release will be! And the "June surprise"? Hmmmm...good question. I wouldn't be inclined to think it's the website, as he's already told us about that. Could be the charity show announcement. I recall him using the same turn of phrase a few months before announcing the "acoustic tommy" performance (that never happened) at the RAH. I think we'll have to keep our ears to the ground on this one.....

JD I'm about 5 hours from Atlanta - where I last saw them and that has been their last southern show to date. I don't really think of Texas as being in the south - more like southwest. What I'm hoping for is a show a little closer to home - like Greensboro (1975 & 1980 and a mere 15 min. to the coliseum from my house ), Raleigh (1989 & 1997 - 2 hours away) or Charlotte (1971 & 1997 - 1 hour away ). I'll keep my fingers crossed for one of these locations, JD.

maybe they've figured out a way to get Moon and JE back on tour. Talk about grateful dead.....
Or maybe they'll team up with Ringo and Paul M. since they don't have any guitar players and the Who need a bass player and a drummer.
We could call them the Bootles, the Whootles, or the Heatles.
Works for me.

Nah they will not do that, Just my opinion like but i suppose it could happen and would indeed be good!
So pete is currently in the studio then, Making a new 'Who album? Well its about time and i hope its a success to him and rodger! I rather hope that they do get something Really good out, the music industry needs a little spicing up as its come to almost a complete hault. They even need "Reality TV" shows to get the people interested in music these days! I do believe Pete could again, kick start some kind of new area with imagination, self-awareness and open mindedness and lead young kids into some sort of new direction in life!
Pete has inspired a hole of lot of people and not all being involved within music! The doors are opening for mr. townshends to flood the consciousness yet again with all the types of stuff, I really do hope Pete is putting all his efforts into this new Who Album, Because i dont see the point and maybe pete would agree; of releasing a new Who record if its nothing on whats gone before, It would only drag the reputation. Yet seeing as pete has been an inspiration in my life, if he is going to release a new album then im all behind him, He must know of my concerns as its been a long time in coming, he must of thought about it over these most recent years.
Lets all hope its a massive success and all goes well!!!

Pete's surprise could well be that he's going to become a grandfather. This wouldn't necessarily prevent him from touring whereas another sprog of his own (with RF on the road with him) wouldn't really be very practical.

I`ll save some time........here`s what may excite us all..... The extract is lifted from the link below..... What then is the news for June? Well - apart from the fact that Rachel starts a full year of In The Attic soon, and I will be there - the Who will be touring and webcasting from Europe, releasing DVDs of every show and releasing a new CD. www.boywhoheardmusic.blogspot.com/
