Well. That might be just a tad too much to expect...
But according to the Times:
AFICIONADOS say that their previous outing in Leeds produced the greatest of all live albums. Now The Who are to return to the city after 36 years.
Today the rock legends Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend are to announce an open-air summer concert in Leeds.
The Who last played the city in 1970 when a furious three-hour Valentine’s Day concert at Leeds University featuring the band at their peak was captured on tape. About 2,000 students packed the refectory and another 1,000 stood on the roof, soaking up the concert’s vibrations through their shoes.
Townshend’s searing, improvised guitar solos during a 15-minute take on My Generation were never bettered. The Tommy musical was performed in its entirety. But only six tracks made it on to the famous Live at Leeds album, sparking a trade in bootlegs.
Townshend remixed the Live at Leeds tapes when the full concert was finally released five years ago. He described their primal sound at the time as “power and volume” and the album inspired the heavy metal genre. The band have not set foot in the city since 1970.
The June concert will not be staged at the campus but at Harewood House, home to the Earl of Harewood. VIP hospitality packages are available. However, students hope that Daltrey and Townshend can also be persuaded to return to the university for a concert recreating the magic of 1970.
The Who are recording their first studio album for 25 years, although Townshend admitted that his hearing difficulty has slowed down progress.
The concert is to be the highlight of the O2 Wireless festival staged in Leeds and London on the last weekend of June. The London show, at Hyde Park, will feature James Blunt, KT Tunstall, Depeche Mode and Massive Attack, who will also play in Leeds. The Flaming Lips will appear alongside The Who on 25 June in Leeds.
Stuart Galbraith, the managing director at Live Nation, promoters of Wireless, said: “With Kaiser Chiefs cleaning up at the Brits there is no hotter city musically than Leeds and we are delighted to be bringing The Who back to the city.”
