The weekend starts here....with a new and groovy poptastic challenge.
Whilst recently digging through an old bunch of files I came across some vintage press reviews for Who singles. Suffice to say their tone is rather different from that of the average modern review. So here's the challenge. I let the reviews speak for themselves and you have to guess which single they're talking about.
Which sometimes may not be quite as easy as it sounds...
The small print; The song title will be revealed either when someone guesses correctly or when all guesses are incorrect and it looks like everyone has run out of ideas. A new review will then be placed. Reviews are only edited to excluded information which may reveal their title.
Review Number 1.
Obviously a biggie, aimed directly and with power at the British market. Terrific sense of rhythm, the odd explosion of volume, and a number that hits you - well, ME then - from the first few phrases. Reminiscent of a certain other group, but see what you think. Very exciting, very varied in atmosphere, and actually likely to be a top three-er. A mind grabber.

Love this!
Gosh, this is tough, tho. I'm gonna guess I Can't Explain based on the "reminiscent of certain other group"-line. As in The Kinks.

To be fair, and as I mentioned to Nnic in the shoutbox earlier, if I didn't already know the answer there's no way I'd manage to guess this one from the description given.
Anyway! So far there have been no correct guesses.
So I'll give you a completely useless clue;
Despite the reviewer's confidence, this single never became a "top three-er".

“Explosion of volume” instantly made me think of anyway,anyhow, anywhere

“Explosion of volume” instantly made me think of anyway,anyhow, anywhere I probably would have thought the same thing myself. But we would both have been wrong.

Sadly again you was fooled! So with this first round of our groovy poptastic review challenge there was no winner. And the answer to Review Number 1 is, believe it or not... MAGIC BUS Reviewed October 1968The next one should be a little easier.....maybe.

And so we move ever onwards....
Review Number 2.
It was a snap decision to release this new single with virtually no forewarning, though I don't think the boys will go far wrong with it! Even though Daltrey works himself up to quite a frenzy in the vocal crescendo, its a much less beserk and abandoned item than the majority of the group's discs.
A rocker with a thoroughly infectious and swinging beat, that's sustained by crashing cymbals and underlying clanking piano, it's tight and controlled with a great feeling of togetherness. Midway through the routine suddenly drops out of rock tempo for a surprising quiet passage - which then erupts into the final furious fling.
Seems likely that this could fare better than many of The Who's singles because the appeal of both performance and material should be wider than the more limited scope of its heavier work.

It was of course;
LET'S SEE ACTION

I was hoping you'd be tricked into thinking it was Won't Get Fooled Again. I'm guessing the "clanking piano" was the giveaway?

Review Number 3.
Tough enough, basically a simple formula. Usual heartiness drumwise from the Moon...that tough, tight , tense, basic rythm. By no means their best, in terms of happening things, but it's all there. Pete Townshend song, natch. Chart cert.

This could be anything with such a generic review....
I’ll throw in first guess as squeeze box

Well it's that time of the week again, and it would seem this round of the challenge has concluded without a winner. Which means I get to keep the prize. That said, Whoireland was in the right ballpark with the era. So, without further ado, Review Number 3 was... THE SEEKER Reviewed March 1970The next one may be a little easier...

Review Number 4.
Opens with reverberating guitar, storming ryhthm and tambourine, then switches to a double-time shuffle. Roger Daltrey really sells this cute and amusing lyric, with harmony support in a few passages - and the whole time there's an underlying rumble like a volcano about to erupt. The instrumental passage is a gas. Personally I don't like it as much as ******* but it's a great hunk of commercial beat from Pete Townshend.
And the only clue you'll be getting are the final couple of sentences of the review....although it's questionable how much additional enlightenment they'll be able to offer.
Flip: A compulsive shaker. Roger sings in pleading tones with chanting support. Insidious, insistant.

And Review Number 4 is indeed...
SUBSTITUTE
Reviewed March 1966
I don't know how you got that as I'm still confused by the "reverberating guitar" and "double-time shuffle"!
The reviews will probably now be coming a lot faster as they're more obviously revealing. So hold onto your hats....

Review Number 5.
The pop art specialists on another way-out offering, with touches of the old protest bit. Strong bass, drums, guitar, lineup very forceful. Song is O.K. but not marvellous. There's a jerky approach which becomes fascinating after a couple of spins. A hit. Flip goes like mad, but isn't so original. Still it'll go down a bomb at parties. Top Fifty tip.
